Do You Really Need A Website?
(If you are asking this question, The answer is probably: Yes!)
What A Website CAN Do For You:
- Establish your Business as a trusted source
- Provide a customized showcase of your goods and services
- Inform visitors about your background, mission, goals
- Create a marketplace to buy directly from you
- Serve as the center of a marketing funnel
- Access Professional Email IE: You@Example.com
- Technical solutions requiring server based options
What A Website Does NOT Do*
- Guarantee visitors or brand awareness
- Sell more widgets or contracts
- Replace other networking efforts (in person and social)
- Solve all marketing and/or branding problems
- Stay up to date or run itself (without effort)
- Automatically handle customer relationships
- Ensure that you will be profitable
There are a lot of misconceptions about what a website does and doesn’t do, or even what they’re capable of. Let’s start by addressing one giant caveat; Owning your own domain and hosting a website gives you the ability to do a great many things if you’re willing to invest in the development of your website
Probably the biggest misconception is that by putting your business on the web, you will almost instantly see an increase in sales and profit. Much like opening a traditional brick and mortar location, you have to spread awareness and drive traffic to your door before you will see any noticeable difference. That’s where paid advertising and organic social networking can make a big difference.
A frequently asked question:
How hard is it to make a website?
How important is it that your website looks good or unique?
What would you like your website to do for you?
Will AI solve my website problem?
Have you seen these ads online claiming to give you a “free website” that AI will create for you in a matter of minutes?
Most of us are smart enough to know there’s no such thing as a free lunch. If you’re getting a free website, you don’t really have a website. What you probably have is a subdomain on a large website provider. This will come with all kinds of limitations and probably ads for other businesses on your ‘website’. Providers will give these away because they know that eventually you will grow tired of having their name in your URL and want to remove the ads on “your website”. When you’re ready to upgrade to a real site, they’re betting that you will go for one of their promotions which makes the leap much easier since you’re content is already on their servers.

AI is here to stay and it’s mostly great… until it’s not. It’s helpful to keep in mind that most of the AI which is currently available is simply looking over thousands of images and articles and drawing comparisons, then predicting what you are trying to accomplish. The speed at which these massive language models can make calculations and present them confidently as the right answer is pretty impressive. That said, there are some pretty big limitations and AI can often miss the mark with the same confidence. Visual AI generators are also basing everything they create on what already exists. They consume as many examples (both good and bad) as they can by scraping the internet, and then regurgitate a composite of what they found based on your inputs. That’s how we get images of people with 7 fingers and 3 eyes.
Facebook is NOT a Website!
We see this happen too often: Someone spends countless energy starting a business and developing their brand. They think of a name, design a logo, a mission statement, and focus on their target market. Then they go as far as starting a Facebook page and Instagram account (or other social platforms) and never go any further in developing an online presence.
We understand why this strategy is appealing. Social media can be a “free” way to promote your brand and communicate with customers. If you’re a one person operation, selling a limited product or service, this might be sufficient when it comes to your digital marketing. After all, if you were to get too many requests or customers, you might not be able to keep up.
When a business or brand is looking to establish themselves as a trusted source in a professional or saturated market, using social media as their main point of contact will be dismissed by many potential customers. Most people already understand this so there is little effect when trying to convince anyone that thinks a “business page” on social media is good enough.
A well designed website establishes your brand, allows you to showcase your products and services, and is the central hub that all other digital marketing should point towards. Think of Facebook as the roadside sign that points to your store, the website is that store!
The Conclusion (TL;DR):
"Free" Sites, AI, & Social Media
If you don’t mind having ads on your site, another company’s name in your URL, and a design based on other websites, then a free AI generated website might just work for you. For those with an abundance of time, and minimal to no budget, we suggest exploring that option because you have nothing to lose. If the results are less than satisfying, we will be here, ready to assist you, if you’re looking for something a bit more advanced or tailored to your needs.
While social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are no substitution for an actual website, they should be part of your overall marketing funnel to drive traffic to your site. You absolutely need to focus on posting to social media consistently, increased engagement, and being active in a community. These platforms are a great way to drive traffic to your website, which can bring increased conversions from curiosity and interest to leads and sales.

This is a great tool, But it's not a Website.
Who does NOT need a website?
This flower stand at the Seattle Public Market sells mainly to tourists. A website probably wouldn’t be a large benefit to their business.
Who Does need a website?
A landscaping professional can showcase their work, success stories, and service options. This is a great use of their website!
